Improve episode rename accuracy

Shape your show folders so the AI matches the right TMDB entry

Overview

VRenamer uses AI to identify and rename your episode files. For the best results, a clean folder structure and clear filenames make a real difference to accuracy.

Normalize the show folder name first. Episodes added to that folder later are then identified far more reliably.

  1. Keep the show name identical to the TMDB entry
  2. Include the year in the folder name

2. Season folder naming

  • Use the “Season” prefix: Season 01/, Season 02/
  • Keep two digits: Season 01, not Season 1
  • Or use the “S” prefix: S01/, S02/

✅ Recommended:

Season 01/
Season 02/

❌ Avoid:

Season 1/
Season One/
Series 1/

3. Episode file naming

  • Use the SxxExx pattern: S01E01, S02E05
  • Include the show name: keep the show’s original title in the filename
  • Optionally include the episode title: e.g. S01E01.Episode.Title.mkv

✅ Recommended:

Game.of.Thrones.S01E01.Winter.Is.Coming.mkv
Friends.S01E01.The.One.Where.Monica.Gets.a.Roommate.mkv
Breaking.Bad.S01E01.Pilot.mkv

❌ Avoid:

Game of Thrones Episode 1.mkv
GOT.1x01.mkv

Troubleshooting

Issue 1: the AI matches the wrong show

Cause: an irregular folder structure or too little information in the filename.

Fix:

  1. Make sure the show folder includes the year
  2. Use the standard SxxExx pattern
  3. Include the show’s original title in the filename

Issue 2: the wrong season is detected

Cause: irregular season folder naming.

Fix:

  1. Use Season 01 or S01
  2. Keep two digits (01, not 1)
  3. Avoid localized season names

Issue 3: the wrong episode is detected

Cause: a non-standard episode number format.

Fix:

  1. Use S01E01, not 1x01
  2. Keep two digits
  3. Make sure episode numbers are continuous and correct

Handling remakes and different versions

Separate them by year and include the version in the folder name:
